GEORGE Cater’s strike salvaged a draw on the road for Chasetown.

The Scholars had been looking like heading for defeat after Jake Twyford opened the scoring for Newcastle Town midway through the first half.

But Cater hit back to earn a point for Mark Swann’s men with a strike 15 minutes from time.

The hosts had the first chance of the game when Ty Webster won a free kick, but Carlos Dos Santos could only send the resulting effort wide of the target.

Chasetown had their best attempt of the opening exchanges when Jordan Evans’ left wing run resulted in a strike going narrowly over the bar, before a header also saw the same result.

The opening goal came after 20 minutes when Newcastle’s Twyford slotted a volley past Curtis Pond after a long throw from Kyle Stubbs.

Cater went close to levelling five minutes later, but Newcastle keeper Joe Slinn stuck out a leg to deny him.

The chances were being exchanged at either end, with Pond having to produce a good save to deny Webster.

Cater looked to win a penalty after going down in the box, but the Chasetown man was instead booked for his efforts.

Newcastle thought they’d doubled their lead ten minutes before the break when Tim Grice found the net, only for the assistant referee’s flag to deny him.

Nathan Barry forced the first real save of the second half as the home side went in search of a second, while at the other end Joey Butlin couldn’t quite steer home a ball into the box.

Chasetown bagged the leveller 15 minutes from time as Cater struck to set up a tense finale.

The best late chance fell to The Scholars when Slinn did well to deny Butlin.
