# Giant pothole opens up in Burntwood road

Highways bosses have defended their programme of repairs after a giant pothole opened up on a Burntwood street.

A number of local residents have been critical about the state of the town’s roads, with Staffordshire County Council confirming [a blitz on the backlog of repairs](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2013/03/30/county-council-planning-easter-blitz-on-backlog-of-potholes/) over the Easter period.

But now a Burntwood councillor has questioned the repairs after a three-foot deep hole appeared next to a road defect that had been fixed on St Luke’s Road.

“You get used to seeing potholes in Burntwood but when I took a closer look at this one I could see that it was more serious than usual as there was a tunnel under the road surface that looked very vulnerable to vehicles, especially lorries,” said Cllr Steve Norman, the Labour group leader on Lichfield District Council.

“I assume that drainage has collapsed underneath as the road looked sunken for two or three yards. The sad part is that it has appeared right next to a recent patch and begs the question was a proper repair done in the first place or just a cosmetic one?

“I was impressed with the speed of the reaction but I am also aware that another pothole in Boney Hay had a cone there for weeks before it was repaired.”

However, Staffordshire County Council’s head of highways operations, Ian Turner, said the authority were working hard to resolve the issues.

More than 3,200 repairs have been carried out across the county since a £500,000 investment in February, with a target of 300 pothole fixes a week to clear the backlog.

“We are fixing as many potholes as we can, as quickly as we can, and have been out an about in Burntwood and the surrounding areas in the past few weeks,” he said.

“Our experienced crews carry out thousands of pothole repairs every year and take the appropriate action depending on factors such as the condition of the road and the weather.”
