Doug Pullen, 30, and his spouse Natasha are both aiming to get elected to Lichfield District Council. The family moved to Burntwood in 2010 and that is why Doug is standing to represent a different ward on May 7. He added that the Garrick, which receives £455,350 funding from the district council is convincing visitors to spend in Lichfield. Natasha, 35, is bidding to become an elected representative for Boney Hay and Central in Burntwood on May 7. Both Doug and his wife revealed that their working lives drew them both into the political arena. Doug said: “I didn’t become involved in politics until I was 22 or 23-years-old. “Natasha and I had a small cleaning business and coming up to the 2010 general election, we wanted to see a Conservative government elected, because historically the Conservatives have enabled businesses to thrive without too much interference from the state.” Natasha continued: “Doug is from Solihull and I’m from Sutton Coldfield in Birmingham – my parents have always been Conservative, but it was only when we set up the business in 2004 or 2005 and I got involved with paying business taxes and dealing with red tape that I became a Conservative.” The couple revealed another reason they’re both Conservatives is because they want to help people to get on in life. Natasha explained that she does voluntary work for a charity that helps victims of domestic violence. Doug added that their cleaning business, which the couple sold around two years ago, enabled their employees to settle down in Britain. Natasha said: “I’m involved with a women’s refuge, where we take the women food and clothes. “No matter how busy I am with family or other commitments – I’ll always try to help people.” Doug continued: “The Conservative Party wants to ensure that no-one lives in poverty and that people can get on in life. To give you one example at our business we had a couple of employees with young families, who over time were able to build themselves up. “They now have their own homes and cars in Sutton Coldfield, and it was fantastic for Natasha and I to see that our business had enabled that to happen.” Both reject the suggestion that Burntwood is a Labour stronghold, but Doug and Natasha believe it will be a hard fought election. Natasha said: “I have been out about knocking on doors across the ward, and I wouldn’t agree that Burntwood is a Labour stronghold at all – most of my canvass responses have been 50-50 between Conservative and Labour.” Doug continued: “If you look at the 2011 local election results – the Conservatives were strong challengers to Labour across the area. “Labour opposition group leader Steve Norman actually lost his Staffordshire County Council seat to UKIP’s Jeff Sheriff, so no I wouldn’t agree either that Burntwood is a Labour stronghold.” The couple who have five children together spoke about how they fell in love over time, and after six months of dating the two were married. Doug explained that away from politics he is retraining to become a barrister with his bar exams set to take place soon. He said: “Natasha and I knew each other for years – I started off as friends with her brother and her sister, and I would go round to their house every Sunday for a roast dinner. “We started dating and we were married within six months – the rest is history.” Natasha continued: “Doug is five years younger than me.
