# Imperial change would not see metric measurements disappear, Lichfield MP says

The use of imperial measurements in the UK will not lead to the phasing out of the metric system, Lichfield’s MP has said.

The Government is launching a three month consultation over changes to how and where traders can sell products in the likes of pounds and ounces.

But Michael Fabricant MP said any change would not see existing measurements disappear.

> “I’m actually all for it, as the biggest economy in the world – the USA – uses our pounds and ounces, fahrenheit, gallons, pints, feet and miles.

> “It is not to replace metric, but we should use them side by side.

> “No-one is suggesting that we abandon metres and kilograms, but why not allow someone to sell a pound of apples if they want to? Currently, they can be fined.

> “Why not have a proper, imperial pint instead of the short-changed version? Now we are independent because of Brexit we can do this.”

But the move has also been criticised from within the Conservative party itself.

Mr Fabricant’s Tory colleague Alicia Kearns, MP for Rutland and Melton, said:

> “This isn’t a Brexit freedom – it’s a nonsense.”
