The next phase of Lichfield’s southern bypass will move a step closer as investigation work begins this month.

An area east of the Birmingham Road and Falkland Road roundabout next to the railway line will see boreholes and trial pits dug to help with the preparation of a design for a new bridge which will allow the road to pass underneath the tracks.

The road will eventually link Birmingham Road to London Road and extend the previous phase from Walsall Road.

Staffordshire County Council’s economy and transport leader Mark Winnington said: “We are pleased to see work begin which will enable detailed designs drawn up for the next phase of the Lichfield southern bypass.

“This is essential work which marks more progress in the whole scheme. The southern bypass is important for the city and we are confident we will secure funding to finish it. This is a priority for the county and district councils as well as the Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Local Enterprise Partnership.

“Improving transport and traffic flow will help future growth and attract further investment.”

The work will begin on January 25, with an investigation of the railway embankment planned for later in the year.

Traffic should not be disrupted as private land is being used for the work.

Cllr Winnington said the new railway bridge could be in place by the end of 2018, subject to funding being secured.
