# Jobs at risk as fire services prepare to combine control centres

A number of jobs are at risk after plans were unveiled to merge two fire service control centres.

West Midlands and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service are hoping to combine their control operations in order to “maximise efficiency”.

Around 25 jobs are likely to be lost when the new centre goes live in 2014.

Len Bloomer, chair of Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Authority, and Councillor John Edwards, chair of West Midlands Fire and Rescue Authority, said in a joint statement.: ““The shared service is being introduced to maximise efficiency and increase resilience.

“The priority is to ensure that communities in both areas continue to receive a first class service and that our firefighters are safe when they are doing this vital job.

“There are currently 101 posts in total across the two control centres. It is proposed that this will be reduced to 76 roles when the new shared fire control centre is operational. Staffing levels will be reviewed 12 months later.

“Some of the 25 posts that will be lost are currently vacant and members of staff may be given the option of voluntary redundancy or redeployment.

“We are committed to providing an efficient and effective service to the people of Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire and the West Midlands. To continue to achieve that aim, changes have to be made.”
