The beaten Lichfield and Burntwood Labour candidate at the general election has urged his party to rethink its local strategy in future.

Chris Worsey reclaimed second place in the vote for Labour, but still saw Conservative Michael Fabricant hold the seat with a majority of more than 18,000.

He believes the party needs to move with the times in terms of connecting with voters.

“One factor in the Conservatives winning power is that they delivered the right message to the right audiences at exactly the right time,” he said. “It’s a classic marketing framework.

“Labour needs to learn these lessons and fast – no more leaflet drops to every door in a constituency.

“Another key reason for the result was that the Tories spent £100,000 a month on Facebook. That’s ten times as much as Labour did.”
