A Conservative councillor has branded criticism of his party’s election leaflets by Labour as “petty”.

Cllr Steve Norman

Cllr Steve Norman, the leader of the Labour group at Lichfield District Council, claimed the Tories had shown their true feelings about Burntwood by only mentioning the town once on their local material.

He said: “It’s been astonishing that the Tories have put out their main election address with just the briefest of mentions of Burntwood – population 23,000 – and only then tagged on to the hoped-for Friarsgate development on the side common for all candidates.

“If I had been a Tory candidate for Burntwood I would have rejected the copy outright and whoever supplied it would have got an earful.

“At this late stage in the campaign my advice to the Conservatives would be just to put it down to the pressure of campaigning and hope Lichfield Conservatives don’t notice it. Then, after Thursday they can just carry on as before pretending Burntwood doesn’t actually exist.

“It confirms what we already know – even the Burntwood Tories vote for Lichfield over Burntwood.”

But Conservative Councillor Doug Pullen said Cllr Norman’s comments proved that Labour are rattled in Burntwood.

“Labour are being petty – they are obviously concerned that they may lose seats in Burntwood tomorrow and are now panicking,” he said.

“Cllr Norman knows full well that our literature discusses local issues such as the blue boards site, the local retail offer, the leisure centre and our parks. If he would like additional copies then I can forward them to him at no cost.”
