LOCAL children are being urged to complete a reading initiative and claim their prizes before it ends.

So far, more than 6,000 children have collected their medals and certificates after taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge at libraries across Staffordshire.

The Read to the Beat challenge was inspired by music and storytelling.

Cllr Hayley Coles, cabinet member for communities and culture at Staffordshire County Council, said:

> "The Summer Reading Challenge is one of our most popular events of the year and one that we all look forward to.
>
> "It’s a fantastic way to keep children reading, learning and having fun throughout the school holidays and it’s great to see so many children taking part.
>
> "We also know that reading for pleasure has huge benefits for children’s confidence, wellbeing and educational development. Good reading skills can also benefit people throughout their life, through further learning and with career progression.
>
> "I’d encourage any children who haven’t yet completed the challenge to do so before the scheme ends."

Children have until 14th September to complete the challenge.
