The visitors took the lead after just six minutes when they were allowed to play on despite a Scholars player being down injured and Chris Baker fired past Curtis Pond.

Newcastle almost doubled their lead in the 36th minute as Daniel Cocks curled a free kick against the base of the post.

Chasetown’s hunt for an equaliser got more difficult early in the second half when Chris Slater received a second yellow card for a foul near the halfway line.

But The Scholars did level on the hour mark when Joe Thomas chased down what seemed like a lost cause and poked the ball past Dave Parton after a mix up between keeper and defender.

Despite being a man down, Chasetown looked the most likely to get the win with Thomas going close with an effort into the side netting.

But in the final minute Newcastle were awarded a controversial penalty and Jordan Cole despatched an undeserved winner.
