# Leader of Burntwood Town Council hails “good old-fashioned prudence” as £90,000 is saved from budget

Councillors in Burntwood say “good old-fashioned prudence” has helped them save £90,000 from their 2018 budget.

Burntwood Town Council’s leader, Cllr Doug Pullen, promised residents there would be even more saved as the council looks to ensure money isn’t wasted.

Cllr Pullen – who resigned from Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet over the collapse of the Friarsgate project – said he was determined to make taxpayer money go as far as possible.

“When elected as Leader in 2017, I assured residents that there would be no money wasted on my watch,” he said. “These savings have been generated by the whole council working hard on cutting costs and generating revenue, while maintaining our investment in the community.

“We have increased sponsorship of events, doubled the advertising revenue from roundabouts, downsized our clerk’s office to free up more rentable space, and made a plethora of back-office savings. These savings mean that Burntwood Town Council has maintained investment in local community groups, continued to deliver free community events such as the Wakes, the Christmas Festival, and Play in the Parks, and invested in local street furniture.”

Cllr Pullen said he was keen to see the council make more money from its assets in order to help keep council tax as low as possible.

“Supported by contributions from local developers, we will invest further in the Old Mining College,” he said. “The commercial success of this great building has the potential to support the town council and residents for many years to come.”
