A £67,000 increase to the wage bill at Burntwood Town Council is essential to keep the Old Mining College Centre working, the authority’s leader has said.

A rise of more than a third in the authority’s share of the council tax [was approved recently](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2016/02/05/council-tax-rise-for-burntwood-residents-is-approved/).

Conservative leader, Cllr Richard Mosson, said the extra revenue gained would help fund local initiatives, as well as pay for staff linked to the Old Mining College Centre.

Burntwood Town Council will move to its new home on Queen Street after agreeing to take on the building from Lichfield District Council.

Cllr Richard Mosson

“The increased wage bill is essential,” Cllr Mosson said. “Taking on the Old Mining College Centre increases our admin and day-to-day running costs.

“The simple fact is that this council could not run the Old Mining College Centre without extra staff.

“In the medium term, we must aim to make the site work by generating more regular income from it.”

However, the opposition Labour group has said the increased budget still meant fewer people to do the work.

Labour’s Cllr Sue Woodward told a recent meeting: “Cllr Mosson has not thought through the budget and the wider issue of the Old Mining College Centre.”
