Voters have accepted that tough decisions had to be made in Lichfield and Burntwood, according to a Conservative councillor.

Iain Eadie was re-elected in the Leomansley ward, seeing off challenges from Labour and the Liberal Democrats.

He was part of a triumphant Tory team who collected 41 of the 47 seats available on Lichfield District Council.

There had been suggestions that voters would hit back after a series of cuts at the local authority which have impacted on services.

But Cllr Eadie believes there is an acceptance that the budget can only stretch so far.

He said: “All local councils are suffering in terms of a reduced income and having to cut their cloth accordingly. The voters are recognising that the Conservative group are making decisions that, truthfully, no-one wants to have to make but somebody’s got to make them.

“When the Labour opposition are saying they don’t want council tax put up – which means more cuts to services – I think people understand we’re trying to do the right thing and the election is a reflection of that.”

Cllr Eadie said it had been a “great 24 hours” as the Conservatives swept to power both nationally and locally.

But he did feel some sympathy for the Lib Dems as they saw their MPs jettisoned by voters, as well as winning just one seat on Lichfield District Council.

“I think the results are the reality of people seeing the benefit of the recovery,” he said. “The Coalition has served the country well.

“It’s just unfortunate for them that the Liberals have paid the price rather than the Conservatives for people looking in and saying it’s been a hard time – but hopefully things are getting better for the country.”
