# Lichfield and Hatherton Canal project boosted by donation

A project to reopen the route of the Lichfield and Hatherton Canal has been boosted by a £50,000 donation.

The donation is handed over in the shadow of the aqueduct over the M6 Toll

The money has been handed over by Midland Expressway Ltd (MEL), operators of the M6 Toll.

The cash will go towards modification of the aqueduct over the road in readiness for it to open as a pedestrian route from Brownhills to The Boat Inn on the A461.

Patron of the Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust, Michael Fabricant, said the money would help with work to develop a heritage towpath trail, which will eventually give a seven-mile route from Huddlesford Junction to Brownhills.

“Roads, canals, and rail lines were the making of Britain when they connected the nation – often with parallel routes side by side. So it is wonderful and fitting that MEL is donating £50,000 to the restoration of a canal which will connect existing canals around the heart of England.

“As a Patron of the Lichfield & Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust and a keen narrowboater, it is a real pleasure to have handed over such a generous cheque to the Trust management.

“I eagerly hope for the day when I will be on one of the first narrowboats to cross the M6 Toll on the very aqueduct which was built for the Lichfield Canal when the road first opened.”
