Paul Maddox, chair of the BID, said St Mary’s had the potential to be a focal point for visitors to the city centre.

“The improvements to St Mary’s will undoubtedly help to draw in extra visitors to the city and keep this historic building alive and well used in the future.”

St Mary’s could eventually be home to Lichfield Library if [controversial plans to switch the facility](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2016/05/20/meeting-told-plans-to-move-lichfield-library-would-safeguard-future-of-both-sites/) from The Friary get the go-ahead.

But Morag Pringle, city centre manager for the BID, said regardless of that proposal, the building needed to be safeguarded for the future.

She said: “We are incredibly lucky in Lichfield to have such beautiful and historic architecture and even more lucky to have it still available for everyone to use.

“The plans for the regeneration of St Mary’s will safeguard this amazing building for future generations to enjoy and will provide a unique cultural space in the very heart of the city.”
