# Lichfield canal towpath trail in line for national award

A Lichfield canal project is in line for a prestigious national award.

The Living Waterways Awards 2015, organised by the [Canal & River Trust](https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/?ref=lichfieldlive.co.uk), recognise the most inspiring and exciting waterway-based projects in the UK, and Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust’s entry has been selected to proceed to the visit stage.

The Trust’s work in creating a disabled-friendly Heritage Towpath Trail at Tamworth Road in Lichfield has been entered for three categories in the awards:

- Community & Volunteering
- Recreation & Tourism
- Restoration & Historic Environment

Led by an independent panel of experts drawn from the voluntary, environmental, arts, heritage, engineering and architecture sectors, the Living Waterways Awards celebrate the work done by individuals, communities and organisations to improve their canals and rivers, making them exciting places to live, learn and spend time.

Part of the restoration of the seven-mile Lichfield Canal, the Tamworth Road section’s Heritage Towpath Trail has quickly become a favourite place for wheel chair and mobility scooter users as well as families, dog walkers, runners and cyclists after its opening last spring.

Having passed the initial assessment stage of the award, the Heritage Towpath Trail will next be the subject of a site visit by two member of the assessment panel, who will also meet volunteers and regular users of the trail.

There will then be a final meeting of the assessment panel to decide which projects will be invited to the Living Waterways Awards ceremony on October 8 in London.
