# Lichfield Cathedral given £100,000 towards masonry repairs

Contractors working on Lichfield Cathedral

Lichfield Cathedral has landed £100,000 worth of funding to help pay for urgent repairs.

The money has been handed over by the Wolfson Foundation and the Cathedral Fabric Repair to support repair to stonework in the historic building’s Lady Chapel.

Lichfield was one of six cathedrals to be chosen for funding from a pool of 18 applicants. Others to be awarded a share of £500,000 are Lincoln, Durham, Ely, Rochester and York.

The Very Reverend Adrian Dorber, Dean of Lichfield, said:

> “The Cathedral is extremely grateful for the support and very pleased that we have been recognised, despite the continued financial challenges all cathedrals are currently facing.

> “The grant could not have come at a better time as we have just said farewell to the Herkenrode Glass from the Lady Chapel, as it begins a five year journey to full restoration. It is now that the hard work really begins as we urgently need to raise the balance of £980,000 from other friends and partners to complete the East End restoration.

> “We hope therefore, with the help of the Wolfson Foundation to continue to preserve the beauty and history of this architectural treasure and enable visitors and the local community to worship here for generations to come.”

Deterioration over the last 200 years has made it difficult to read the 16th Century Herkenrode windows and the scenes within them. The decision was taken to restore the glass after experts warned the Lady Chapel stonework required urgent conservation work.

Paul Ramsbottom, chief executive of the Wolfson Foundation, said:

> “Cathedrals are the most significant buildings within England’s wonderful architectural heritage. The Wolfson Foundation is glad to be involved in maintaining them for current and future generations.”
