People are being urged to help make a difference to the lives of children this Christmas by donating a toy to Lichfield Cathedral appeal.

The initiative began last year and sees people buy an extra present to be given to Lichfield Children and Family Services to help brighten the festive period for youngsters who need help and support.

The Lichfield Cathedral Toy Appeal will take place at the St Nicholas Service on December 4 at 3.30pm.

“St Nicholas is known in the Eastern Church as Nicholas the Wonderworker,” said the Very Revd Adrian Dorber, the Dean of Lichfield. “He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him, and thus became the model for Santa Claus.

“Christmas brings particular heartache for families in difficulty. Children can be the victims of family breakdown and poverty, and we want to support Lichfield Children and Family Services as they reach out to families facing hardship and crisis. In the spirit of St Nicholas, the Cathedral wants to ensure especially vulnerable children can experience some of the joy and delight of Christmas.”

People are asked to donate new, boxed toys for children of all ages at the service. Those who cannot attend, can hand their toys in at the Old Stables (next to Chapters Restaurant) or at the Vergers’ Ducket in the Cathedral.
