Lichfield City Council is set to discuss the impact of ward boundary changes – alterations which are likely to see a reduction in the number of representatives.

Proposals are being drawn up by Lichfield District Council on the back of a report by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE).

The decision is likely to have a knock-on effect for the City Council, particularly if the District Council’s proposal is adopted.

Members of the City Council will discuss their response to the LGBCE report at a meeting on Monday (March 3), with two options under consideration:

- Supporting a six ward proposal for the city area with 26 councillors instead of 28.
- Reverting to a five ward proposal for the city with 25 councillors instead of 28.

A report to the meeting says that while there is no requirement for the City Council to achieve electoral equality in terms of voter numbers, it is a “desirable objective”.

The issue will be discussed at the meeting in the Guildhall, starting at 6.30pm on Monday.
