Lichfield City FC suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of one of the other favourites for promotion.

The trip to Hinckley was another early season test for Gary Birch’s side, but they returned empty handed from their Midland Football League Division One encounter.

In-form Tony Clarke’s shooting boots deserted him with just eight minutes on the clock when he spurned a one-on-one chance.

Another effort went begging for Clarke, before Sheridan Martinez produced a good side to prevent City falling behind.

Hinckley saw an effort go just over, while Lichfield’s Joe Parke also went close as both sides traded blows.

The hosts hit the bar with an effort from distance before finally breaking the deadlock after 37 minutes thanks to a Luke Richards goal.

Hinckley went twice either side of the interval as they looked to kill off any hopes of a City comeback.

And that’s just what they did with a goal from Javia Roberts.

The second took the wind out of Lichfield’s sails and it could have been worse, with the post coming to the rescue in the latter stages.

City return to action on Bank Holiday Monday when they visit local rivals Stafford Town, kick-off 3pm.
