Lichfield City FC’s FA Cup run was halted in abrupt fashion by Halesowen Town.

Hopes were high of an upset against higher level opposition, but City were blown away by clinical finishing during the second half.

The opening period saw Jamie Molyneux force Lichfield keeper Adam Jenkins into an early save.

It was to prove a warning sign as Halesowen got themselves in front after a strike from distance by Ashley Sammons.

It was 2-0 just a few minutes later when a defensive mix-up saw Molyneux slot the ball past Jenkins.

Lichfield regrouped and enjoyed some possession as the half wore on and got themselves back into the game when James Taylor headed past the keeper just before the break.

The second half started just as the first had with the home side on top. Dan Thurstance prevented City from going 3-1 down when he cleared off the line.

But the pressure was building and Halesowen netted their third thanks to a Robbie Bunn strike on 55 minutes.

It was 4-1 just moments later when Montel Gibson found the net.

Bunn sent another shot wide as Halesowen continued to dominate – and their fifth goal then arrived just after the hour mark when Luke Yates rounded Jenkins before slotting home.

Lichfield continued to fight though and thought they’d pulled a goal back only for Thurstance to be denied by the keeper who also kept out the follow-up from Taylor.

But it was Halesowen who had a cutting edge in front of goal, with Gibson netting his second and third of the game in the final two minutes to wrap up a 7-1 scoreline.
