LICHFIELD City navigated their first test in the Walsall Senior Cup with a penalty shootout win over Foley Meir.

Fans at the Trade Tyre Community Stadium were treated to an entertaining fixture which saw Kieran Francis net a hat-trick as the game finished 3-3 before the tie was eventually won 4-2 on spot kicks by Ivor Green’s men.

City got off to a dream start when an early spell of possession saw Josh Mansell tee up Francis at the back post to guide the ball past visiting keeper Callum Shuttlewood.

But Jack Beeson had to be alert at the other end to keep out a one-on-one chance.

Foley Meir did level things up after 15 minutes though when a ball into the box was turned home by Fin Patterson.

The visitors then got themselves in front when a free kick from Aiden Lloyd five minutes later was deflected beyond Beeson.

Lichfield restored parity after half-an-hour when Francis again found space at the back post to make it 2-2.

The City man wasn’t done for the half as ten minutes before the break he cut inside before powering the ball home to give his side the lead.

Sonny Sheasby went close in the second half only to be denied by a smart save from Shuttlewood.

The scores were level again on 55 minutes as Tom Wakefield placed a low shot beyond Beeson.

Lichfield thought they’d got back in front when Jack Edwards’ strike was deflected onto the bar, but the shootout would end up being the decider.

Beeson saved the first spot kick and then Foley Meir missed another of their kicks as City netted all four of their penalties to progress.
