A disappointing performance saw Lichfield City take an early lead only for the home side to hit back and take all three points in a bruising encounter.

Action from Atherstone v Lichfield City

Paul Holt’s side made the perfect start when Sam Geffen headed home from an Ashley Evans free-kick with just two minutes on the clock.

It looked as though City would build on their lead with Olly Budd somehow missing from five yards out.

But Lichfield’s defensive line had to be reshuffled on 20 minutes when a clash of heads saw Jonathan Huckfield leave the field with concussion and a broken nose.

The defender’s departure clearly unsettled City who saw their advantage wiped out when Joe Boggilo headed home to put Atherstone back on level terms.

Things got even worse for Lichfield shortly afterwards when Ashley Wilkes pounced on some hesitant defending by Jordan Hunt to slide the ball past keeper Craig Johnson and give the hosts a 2-1 lead going into the break.

The early signs were brighter for City in the second half, with Liam Holt guilty of spurning a good chance when he fired straight at Brendan Hazlett in the Atherstone goal.

But Wilkes made the visitors pay for their lack of cutting edge in front of goal as he capitalised on more suspect defending.

The home side effectively made the game safe on 73 minutes as Boggilo got his second and the Adders’ fourth before a late Chris Milner header gave City some small consolation.
