LICHFIELD Colts have celebrated a hard-fought 27-20 win over Stafford in the plate final of the Staffordshire Cup.

The city youngsters had to deal with the psychological disappointment of not being in the main final and were facing a Stafford with nothing to lose.

The final was played at Wednesbury RFC, with the opponents making use of their handy driving maul to take an early lead. Their other two tries also came from line outs with a catch and drive.

But Lichfield were soon in front as Rhys Wynne scored under the posts without being touched, George Butler converted.

Stafford got back in front and, despite being under pressure for long periods, they held out until eventually Butler kicked a penalty to bring it back to 10-10.

The pressure continued and Joe Ward squeezed in the corner, so that the teams turned around with the Myrtle Greens 15-10 ahead.

The score soon became 20-15 to Stafford though as they grabbed a third try and a penalty from their reliable full back.

Lichfield were now struggling to impose themselves and did not use any sort of kicking to mix the game up.

With 20 minutes to go, however, the forwards dug in and raised the bar and the posts at the top end of the pitch suddenly did not seem so distant. Ethan Gallagher, whose try at Bromsgrove confirmed the colts league title, was too quick for a tiring rearguard and things were level once more.

The tide had definitely turned and Ward was able to score a second try under the posts, converted by Butler.

Lichfield had more of the territory for the final minutes, but they had to work really hard to ensure they earned a second trophy of the season.
