A Lichfield councillor has called for residents to ensure a local Conservative MP is “turfed out” of his seat next time they get the chance to vote.

It comes after the Tories lost two by-elections this week.

The party saw a huge majority in Tiverton and Honiton wiped out as the Liberal Democrats took the seat, while Labour were victorious in Wakefield.

Cllr Paul Ray, who stood against Michael Fabricant in Lichfield during the 2019, 2017 and 2015 General Elections, said the results this week had shown that change was possible even in those areas such as Lichfield which are considered to be safe Conservative seats.

Speaking after the by-election results were announced, the Liberal Democrat councillor said:

> “What a result, what a message – the Lib Dems have made massive in-roads and are offering a positive and caring alternative to this awful Tory Government.
>
> “Michael Fabricant certainly deserves to be turfed out. He reflects all that is so wrong, uncaring and discredited about this awful Government.”
>
> Cllr Paul Ray, Lichfield District Council

Mr Fabricant has [branded the by-election results as “awful” for the party](https://lichfieldlive.co.uk/by-election-defeats-awful-for-conservatives-but-not-surprising-lichfield-mp-says/) – but said they did not come as a shock.

And he told *Lichfield Live* he was not surprised by Cllr Ray’s comments either:

> “As Mandy Rice-Davies famously once said, ‘well, he would say that, wouldn’t he’.”
