# Lichfield District Council Leader insists Friarsgate is on track

The Leader of Lichfield District Council has once again confirmed that the Friarsgate development will not be hit by the recession.

Councillor David Smith had [already insisted](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2009/07/02/lichfield-district-council-leader-insists-friarsgate-scheme-will-go-ahead/) claims that the loss of funding from Advantage West Midlands because of cutbacks were wide of the mark.

And he has now confirmed that the project is still on track – and tipped Friarsgate to thrive as the country exits a recession.

He told The Lichfield Blog:

> “Friarsgate is likely to be one of the first shopping schemes to emerge post-recession in this country and it is one of the most exciting too.”

Speculation that the scheme could face alterations and be downscaled as the after-effects of the recession take hold have also been dismissed by Cllr Smith.

He explained:

> “The content of Friarsgate is set in stone. We see no need to change any of the fundamentals of the project.”

The multi-million pound Friarsgate scheme is set to feature a department store, hotel and a number of residential apartments.
