Lichfield homeowners who lose money on their properties because of a new high-speed rail line could be entitled to compensation.

The admission came from the Government’s transport minister Philip Hammond during a visit to the city.

The visit was designed to allow him to see first hand some of the areas affected by the proposed route.

And while those who will see their properties demolished by the new line would be automatically entitled to a payout, Mr Hammond confirmed that the Government is looking to create a system where homeowners could recoup some of the value their properties may lose.

> “When we come forward with a consultation, we will include proposals for a compensation scheme which goes way beyond the statutory compensation scheme which only delivers for people whose properties are actually destroyed and demolished by the railway.”
