A Lichfield man has been selected to take part in the 2012 Paralympic torch relay.

Simon Beresford was chosen by supermarket chain Sainsbury’s to carry the flame on August 29 after being nominated by a number of people as he strives to raise awareness of Down Syndrome through sport.

In 2007, he was the first person with Down Syndrome to complete the London Marathon – a feat he repeated the following year, raising more than £20,000.

The 45-year-old said: “I am so excited to have been chosen to carry the Paralympic flame.

“I am really honoured to be taking part in a momentous occasion for both the United Kingdom and Lichfield and can’t wait to take part.”

Simon’s achievements have even inspired locals in Furth, Germany, to create a Down Syndrome running club to compete in the local marathon.

The Paralympic torch will travel in a 24-hour relay between Stoke Mandeville in Aylesbury and the Olympic Park in Stratford, East London on August 28 and 29.
