A LICHFIELD man is preparing to take on an ultramarathon challenge to raise money for the NHS team that saved his daughter’s life.

Tom Penzer Adams’ daughter Delilah was born with a twisted intestine, leaving her unable to feed.

But thanks to medics at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, she underwent lifesaving surgery at just five days old.

With Delilah now eight months old, her dad Tom is taking on six ultramarathons in six days to raise money for the neonatal surgical ward.

The 37-year-old will be spelling out his daughter’s name with a route that goes from Dover to Eastling, then Longfield to Islington, followed by Luton to Abthorpe and ending at the hospital where she was treated.

His challenge will cover a total of 220 miles.

Tom said:

> “Delilah’s strength and resilience has inspired me to push my limits and raise funds for a cause that supports other families going through similar hardship.

> “The work done by the neonatal surgical ward is nothing short of life-changing. Not only am I hoping to raise awareness of this condition, my intention is to raise as much money as possible to aid the phenomenal doctors and nurses who saved our baby girl.”

His challenge will start on 30th June and end on 5th July.

Claire Murray, a ward sister on the ward at Birmingham Children’s Hospital said:

> “At just five days old, Delilah arrived at neonatal surgery with a condition called malrotation and volvulus, where her bowel had twisted around itself. This necessitated urgent surgery to save her bowel’s blood supply and ultimately her life.

> “Tom’s fundraising effort will raise vital funds, enabling us to continue providing the extra loving care that goes above and beyond to promote bonding, comfort and enhance the best possible care for the babies who need surgery to survive.

> “We couldn’t be more grateful for this tremendous effort on our behalf.”
