LICHFIELD'S MP has called for more accountability and financial oversight in school academy trusts.

Dave Robertson introduced a Ten Minute Rule Bill in Parliament following the confirmation that the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership (ATLP) will be broken up.

It comes after financial difficulties left the trust facing an £8million deficit with jobs at risk. The changes will see 24 schools switch to new providers.

The Labour MP said the experience exposed concerns about transparency, governance and accountability within multi-academy trusts – and highlighted the need for stronger safeguards to protect pupils, staff and families.

The Bill introduces measures including greater financial transparency, more governance standards, enhanced scrutiny of major spending decisions, protections to prevent executives responsible for serious mismanagement moving directly into leadership roles at other trusts, and stronger representation for parents and staff in decision-making.

Mr Robertson said:

> "What families, pupils and staff experienced with ATLP should not be repeated.
>
> "This Bill is about ensuring problems are identified earlier, increasing transparency and accountability, and restoring confidence that academy trusts are acting in the best interests of the communities they serve.
>
> "Building on the Government's work to strengthen academy trust accountability, it will help ensure that no other community goes through what families at Arthur Terry Learning Partnership schools went through."

The MP said he had developed the proposals following discussions with organisations from across the education sector, including teaching unions, governance bodies, trust representatives and parents.
