Lichfield’s MP has hailed the Prime Minister’s “bold” decision to call a snap General Election.

Theresa May made the surprise announcement this morning, citing the need for a more unified approach to Brexit negotiations.

The move means that, should Parliament agree, voters will go to the polls on June 8.

Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant said the move was a necessary one.

“Although the timing of the announcement was a surprise to us all, the need for an election was becoming more apparent day by day,” he said. “With the Scottish Nationalists and the Lib Dems calling for a second EU Referendum and Labour seeking to block Brexit with constant wrecking amendments, it was becoming clear that a working majority of only 12 would be insufficient to carry out the people’s will.

“Theresa May’s announcement today was bold and tomorrow I will be voting in favour of her Motion in Parliament calling for a General Election.”

Although much of the reasoning has pointed towards the UK’s impending exit from the EU, Mr Fabricant insisted the election should not be fought solely on Brexit battlegrounds.

“This General Election is not just about the terms of our leaving the European Union,” he said. “It is about the management of the economy and the competance – or otherwise – of the opposition parties to run the nation.

“It is important that we give the Government a clear mandate to govern. A strong Parliamentary majority will make Theresa May’s negotiating position with Brussels all the more powerful. And while I have always thought the UK is being held back by our membership of the EU, I am heartened by the Lichfield electorate voting 59 to 41 in favour of Brexit.”

The timing also means proposed changes to Parliamentary boundaries will not yet come into effect – meaning some voters in parts of Streethay and Whittington will still be voting in the Lichfield constituency.

Mr Fabricant explained: “Locally, the election – if Parliament passes the motion with a two-thirds majority tomorrow – will be fought on existing Parliamentary boundaries. It was likely that the 2020 election would have seen changes with Tamworth gaining a ward off Lichfield and Lichfield replacing that ward with one from the Stafford constituency.

“These changes will not be in place for this election and then will not be changed until the General Election after that.

“I look forward to the campaign.”
