# Lichfield MP praises ‘constructive’ HS2 meeting

Lichfield’s MP has claimed a meeting on the proposed high-speed rail route through the city was a “constructive” one.

Michael Fabricant was among a delegation who met with the Secretary of State for Transport, Philip Hammond, at the Lichfield Guildhall.

The meeting discussed several aspects of the HS2 line, including the proposed viaduct over the A38 near Streethay – a concern the minister [admits he understands](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2010/10/05/minister-understands-local-concern-over-lichfield-hs2-viaduct-plan/).

And Mr Fabricant believes the meeting was a positive step. He added:

> “We had a very constructive meeting indeed and I am encouraged by it. We discussed whether the HS2 is really needed and the route it might take. I and others emphasised that the rail viaduct across the eastern side of Lichfield affecting Boley Park and Streethay is totally unacceptable.

> “I was very encouraged when Philip Hammond said at the meeting that the ‘goal posts have moved since the Coalition Government announced that the line, if approved, will extend from London up to Manchester and Leeds and not just terminate north of Lichfield’. This will mean that the present route proposed by Labour where the line joins the existing West Coast Main Line near Kings Bromley could possibly be avoided which would be beneficial to Lichfield.

> “Philip Hammond told me that he will now take these proposals back to HS2 engineers to determine exactly what is achievable. The new Government’s preferred route will be published in a couple of months time and then there will be a period of 5-6 months in 2011 for further alternatives to be proposed.

> “It’s still early days, but we are already seeing signs of movement in the right direction.”
