LICHFIELD’S MP says changes to a benefits bill will create “positive policies”.

The Government’s Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment Bill had looked to be in doubt after reports a number of Labour MPs threatened to vote against it.

But after late changes, it eventually passed by 335 votes to 260.

Lichfield MP Dave Robertson said he had been among those who “could not support” the original proposals – but added that he had eventually backed the bill following the revisions.

He said:

> “The initial draft of this bill did include some great ideas like the Right to Try, a permanent uplift to the basic rate of Universal Credit and a massive funding boost to help people find work.

> “Unfortunately, it also included some very difficult proposals around Personal Independent Payments (PIP) in Clause 5 of the bill.

> “As it was originally written, I could not support it.

> “Last week, the Government gave a commitment to ensuring that no one currently receiving PIP would lose out as part of this process. Today, the Government went further and committed to removing Clause 5 and the changes to PIP entirely.

> “That leaves a bill which includes positive policies to support vulnerable people and help job seekers find work. That’s something I will always support.

> “This doesn’t mean the end of the story though, and I’ll be checking the amendments very closely next week to make sure that the bill is one I can support when the final vote happens next week.”

The bill will see people who currently receive PIP or the health portion of Universal Credit continuing to do so. But planned cuts would still apply to future claimants.
