LICHFIELD’S MP says the Government is looking to protect children rather than seeking to score political points.

The Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill is being voted on in the House of Commons today (8th January).

The Conservatives saw an amendment – which would have seen a national inquiry into grooming gangs set up – fail by 364 votes to 111.

Labour’s Dave Robertson said that had it been successful, it would have delayed “vital reforms” to support stronger police action on child sexual abuse and provide greater protection for victims.

He said:

> “I strongly support these new measures designed to keep children safe.
>
> “Conservative and Reform MPs tried to block this and have another inquiry, even though none of the recommendations of the last inquiry have been carried out.
>
> “We are taking action to protect children, not creating more hot air and trying to score points.”

The Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill will also introduce stricter rules around home-schooling, inspections and regulation of private education institutions.
