LICHFIELD got their league season off to a confidence-boosting start with a win at Dudley Kingswinford.

The Myrtle Greens battled it out in an even first half to claim a 21-8 lead a the break before bossing the second period to secure the victory.

The visitors made the ideal start with a try for James McKenzie after just three minutes – a walk in after a clever pass from the influential Rich Burton.

If that one was on the easy side for him, his next certainly was not, as he outpaced four defenders from his own 22.

With two conversions from the very steady Henry Nevitt, a 14-point lead was nothing less than Lichfield deserved.

Dudley did manage to get a foothold in the game as the half moved on and after 28 minutes, they created an overlap on the right for winger Leo Davies to squeeze over between two defenders.

Having gained some momentum, they were not able to forge on, despite Rhys Harper kicking a simple penalty.

Crucially, Lichfield finished the first half on top and they made it pay when Sam Benson forced his way over from close range, with Nevitt converting again.

From there on, the Myrtle Greens gained control with their line out and scrum working well. Paul Maxwell-Keys was the beneficiary for tries number four and five, finishing strongly on both occasions, one of which was converted by Kai Lucas-Dumolo.

A multi-phase attack led to the final try as Jack Hurst burrowed his way over eventually with a tiring Dudley defence finally submitting.

In the final play of the game, Thomas Walker found a hole in the Lichfield rearguard to score, with Harper converting.
