Lichfield parsnip growers R&RW Bartlett struck gold at the Heart of England Fine Food Diamond Awards.

The father and son partnership lifted the trophy for Best Fresh Produce at a glittering awards night held at the Hilton Metropole in Birmingham.

This was the fourth annual Diamond Awards night organised by HEFF, a group that champions the best in local food and drink across Staffordshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Birmingham and the Black Country.

Judges described the parsnips as having a beautiful, even shape and said they were very tender, almost creamy in taste and with an excellent sweetness.

Son Rod, who has grown parsnips with his dad since he was a schoolboy, said they were both delighted with the award.

From their base at Shenstone Park Farm where they grown parsnips on 700 acres of land in the Lichfield area, Rod said:

> “We are both thrilled by this award. We have always been proud of our parsnips and it is great when someone else compliments you on the quality of your produce.”

They are now hoping to launch Staffordshire Gold parsnips onto the market this summer.

Rod added:

> “We are proud of our county and it provides the perfect land for growing perfect parsnips so we thought we would promote Staffordshire and the fact that we grow locally. Dad thought of the name when they discovered Saxon treasure just a few miles down the road and we all think they will be very popular both locally and throughout the country.”
