A suspected case of cable theft near Lichfield has been ruled out after engineers discovered that a fault was to blame.

Train services were severely disrupted on Friday (October 7) after engineers were called to reports a telecoms cable had been damaged near Watery Lane.

But despite [initial concerns](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2011/10/07/train-services-hit-after-railway-cabling-is-damaged-in-lichfield/) that attempts had been made to steal the cable, British Transport Police have confirmed that there had not been a deliberate attack.

“Network Rail engineers reported that a quantity of cable had been cut, causing a loss of power to signals which resulted in delays to passengers on the West Coast Mainline on Friday morning,” a spokesperson said. “Following a full investigation, British Transport Police can confirm that the cut cable which had been discovered at Watery Lane on Friday was not responsible for the signaling problems.

“The loss of power was due to a technical fault and no criminal acts were found to have taken place at the location.”
