# Lichfield residents begrudgingly accept latest round of Council cuts

Residents have begrudgingly accepted the latest round of spending cuts announced by [Lichfield District Council ](http://lichfielddc.gov.uk/?ref=lichfieldlive.co.uk)last night.

Councillors voted through the first phase of the Fit For The Future programme, which will save the authority £1.7 million a year. The proposals will include reduced leisure activities across the district.

And taxpayers have suggested other ways via Twitter in which the Council could have saved money.

However, Council Leader Mike Wilcox insisted the authority had no choice, but to cut spending.

Cllr Wilcox said: “At the meeting councillors acknowledged the potential impact of the cuts on local communities.

“However, it was stressed that, due to stark reductions in government funding, the Council has no choice but to press ahead with the proposals, which will now be implemented.

“Sadly the financial position the council and the wider economy faces means we no longer have the money to deliver the wide range of services we have historically provided, and hard decisions have to be made.

“It was essential that the first phase of Fit for the Future programme moved through the process swiftly in order to balance our budget this year and to help prepare us for further cuts in future years.”

And @Adesteelepublic has backed the stance taken by Mr Wilcox.

However, @sirmikeuk challenged the Council to cut back on wasteful spending.

But @Paulmaddox2 believes a volunteer should drive the Mayoral car instead to save money.

Cllr @Sue\_Woodward expressed her frustration at the Council’s decision.
