# Lichfield resident helps St Giles Hospice’s lottery reach target

A Lichfield woman has helped a charity lotery achieve its targets ahead of schedule.

St Giles Hospice started the year aiming to sign up 2,010 new members for its fundraising game.

Diane Russell’s decision to sign-up allowed the charity to reach their target with weeks to spare.

To say thank you, St Giles presented 53-year-old Diane with a special gift of bubbly and flowers to celebrate.

Diane, who works in the kitchens at Lichfield Cathedral School, said:

> “It was a lovely surprise when I found out I was the 2010th new lottery member of the year, and I’m pleased to have been able to help St Giles Hospice achieve its goal.

> “I’ve never played the lottery before but I decided to become a member when a canvasser came and knocked on my door. St Giles is a very worthy cause and playing the lottery is my way of doing something good for a fantastic local charity. I’m not playing to win, but if I get lucky again and my number is drawn, it’ll be an added bonus!”

The St Giles Hospice Lottery gives away over £3,000 in prizes every week – including a £2,000 jackpot for one lucky winner – and it costs £1 a week to take part.

For seven consecutive years, the lottery has raised more than £1 million, paying for the specialist care of one in six of St Giles Hospice patients. Since it was established in 1997, it has raised in excess of £10 million for hospice care and is the most successful lottery of its kind in the whole of the UK.
