Lichfield RUFC saw their unbeaten start to the season come to and end after a second half collapse against Aston Old Eds.

Conditions were perfect for the top of the table clash and couldn’t have started better for Lichfield. They exerted pressure from the start and were creating mayhem in the Aston defence. Greg Massey was varying the game well and Tom Adams found himself in space on a number of occasions, only desperate Aston tackling preventing a score.

The pressure finally told in the ninth minute when Gareth Brear rounded off a fine team move to score in the corner, a try which was well converted by Luke Massey, for a 7-0 lead.

Lichfield’s forwards were dominant at this stage and were supplying Butler with a plentiful share of possession.

In the 31st minute a neat break by Greg Massey was finished by Sporcic who outpaced the cover defence to go in under the posts, Luke Massey again converting to put Lichfield ahead 14-0.

Aston then took advantage of some shoddy defence to narrow the score 14-5, with their winger going through almost the entire Lichfield pack who had stopped anticipating a penalty.

Two further penalties from Luke Massey in the 31st and 39th minute saw Lichfield go into the break comfortably ahead at 20-5 and Aston counted themselves lucky that the deficit wasn’t more.

This was Lichfield’s best half of rugby this season and they turned around confident that they could clinch victory.

Aston had other ideas though and in a dramatic turnaround stole the match scoring tries in the 51st, 61st and 69th minute and a penalty in the 69th. This coupled with a bizarre decision from the referee in the 65th minute when he awarded a penalty try without explanation meant that Aston took the game 29-23, Lichfield’s score in the second half being a penalty by Luke Massey in the 79th minute.

**Team**: Bryant, Gabbitass, Bassett (c), Hicks, Squire, Burton, Albutt, Thompson; Butler, G Massey, Sporcic, Baker, Adams, Brear, L Massey. Subs: Taylor, Perrins and Ngoma.
