Having clinched the league title the week before, Lichfield RUFC’s development team just about held on to win their league cup final against Bournville.

The clash turned out to be a game of two halves, but surprisingly it was the team playing into the strong wind that had the better of each period.

Playing into the gusts, Lichfield started brilliantly with some great team interplay creating two tries within ten minutes. The moves were finished off by Tom Cokayne and Sam Craddock and both converted by Neil Antcliffe. Tom Cokayne added a penalty soon after and the Greens were 17 points up after only 15 minutes.

Bournville then started to get themselves into the game and pulled a converted try back before Lichfield got back on top for the last part of the half. More sustained pressure resulted in two almost identical tries down the short side for Olly Savage and they turned around at half-time with a significant 27-7 advantage.

The Greens had hoped to press home their advantage in the second period and started brightly until the Bournville second row intercepted a pass before galloping 50 metres to score under the posts.

But a serious knee injury for the opposition skipper saw the game halted for 25 minutes and the disruption seemed to take Lichfield’s mind off the game.

Bournville pulled back another try after 56 minutes before the game was halted once again for injury – this time to one of the Lichfield team.

The stop-start nature of the game was really not helping the Greens’ concentration and when Bournville then pulled back another try to make it 27-24 it meant for a very fraught final five minutes.

But the Lichfield defence just about held out and they even managed to spend the last couple of those minutes in the opposition 22.
