Lichfield RUFC found visitors Scunthorpe too tough a nut to crack at Cooke Fields.

The hosts went into the game with confidence after showing positive signs at Sandbach. But the visitors came to the city on the back of a promising start to the season which has seen them win two of their three fixtures so far.

Things got off to a poor start as Lichfield found themselves 7-0 down within two minutes. A turnover at the ruck saw the visiting fly-half dart over the line for a try which was converted.

The Greens were desperate to right the early wrong but were too eager at times, leading to the first of many penalties which the full-back duly converted.

Lichfield did eventually settle and Maxwell-Keys fed Rowlands to finish in the corner.

Just as it seemed the hosts would kick on, they lost the ball or were penalised. This allowed the Scunthorpe full back to keep the score board ticking over.

Lichfield again managed to string together their phases, busting through the defence with Will Cotterhill barging his way over on the blind side.

But the Greens once again gave up possession cheaply, allowing the visiting winger to score as the scoreboard showed 20-10.

However, Lichfield finished the half the brighter, hitting a purple patch and scoring a converted try through Rich Burton, and a penalty from Luke Massey. They really should have secured a bonus point try before the half, when a three v one chance was wasted.

The half time instructions focused on cutting the penalty count as both sides returned for the second period with 20 points apiece.

But an error-strewn half saw Scunthorpe capitalise time and time again.

Four tries in total were scored from the Scunthorpe half, three converted and a penalty as the visitors racked up 29 points in what was a disappointing second half for Lichfield.

The sole response was a Luke Massey penalty with the game finishing 23-49.
