Lichfield RUFC secured a hard-fought victory in a rollercoaster encounter at Bromsgrove.

Having not met for several seasons, hands were shook and welcomes extended as both teams played there part in an enthralling game.

Bromsgrove had the opening possession but failed to find any forward momentum. An unfortunate clash saw Charlie Milner helped from the field as he suffered a nasty concussion.

With the pack shuffled, it was the chance for the Greens to attack from midfield, and carrying the tempo from last week, the backs found space in the wide channels from Greg Massey to break through and score within five minutes. Brother Luke converted to secure a 7-0 lead.

Lichfield had the better of the possession for the next ten minutes but were guilty of allowing Bromsgrove to relieve pressure too easily when they found themselves in their own 22.

It was the hosts who then managed to get a foothold for ten minutes as they played the conditions and pinned the visitors back into their own half. Lichfield failed to exit successfully and the pressure told as they were found offside. The Bromsgrove fly-half converted on 25 minutes.

From the kick off Lichfield lost the contact and found themselves giving up ground. Bromsgrove grew in confidence and sped up their play, edging into the 22 with some powerful forward running. Closer and closer they got, before eventually a gap appeared for the fly-half to dart through and score. He added the extras and Bromsgrove were 10-7 ahead.

It was now the turn of the Greens to come straight back as they found their rhythm and again made ground in the wide channels. Greg Massey broke a tackle and accelerated away before chipping the fullback. The ball bobbled and bounced and landed kindly for the oncoming Rich Fielding to drop on. Luke Massey converted and the lead was restored.

But Bromsgrove again retaliated as the visitors were being penalised far too often for offside. Maxwell-Keys was yellow carded and when Lichfield thought they’d escaped, they turned the ball over on their own 5m. The resulting scrum saw the home scrum-half find space on the blind side and dive into the corner to score. The fly-half converted to give his side a 17-14 lead at half-time.

The second half started as the first had finished, with Bromsgrove pressuring the Lichfield line. The visitors were resolute, though, and harried the hosts into a mistake as a loose pass was intercepted by Greg Massey who sprinted the length of the pitch to score under the posts. Luke converted in what proved to be a turning point in the game.

The Greens took control and pinned the home side into their own half, forcing errors and making ground with ball in hand. Quick play saw the ball moved across the width, eventually finding Maxwell-Keys in space to beat the winger with power and footwork to score right in the corner. Massey once again converted from the right.

Again, Bromsgrove rallied as the visitors were guilty of poor defence, allowing the hosts to make gains. Strong forward carries and consistent infringement interpretations forced Lichfield back, eventually folding as a forward crashed over close to the posts for the fly-half to convert.

There was again a response from Lichfield as they kicked themselves into good field positions and pressed hard. Powerful forward play took them within inches before celebrations were heard and the referee blew his whistle, awarding a try in the far left corner. Scrum half Evans seemed the man getting the plaudits for what was a resolute team try. Massey was unable to convert but Lichfield had once again extended their lead to nine points with ten minutes to go.

The Greens seemed to be closing the game out and repelling Bromsgrove attacks, until a series of penalties had them pegged on their try line. A resulting scrum saw them going backwards as the home side got scent of the bonus point and the referee quickly awarded a penalty try. The extras were added in a nail biting finish as there was only minutes to play.

But Lichfield held firm and forced the mistake as the final whistle was blown to secure their first away win and second five point haul of the season.

This weekend Lichfield welcome local rivals Burton to Cooke Fields.
