Lichfield RUFC felt a backlash on Saturday as Scunthorpe amended the previous week’s drubbing at the hands of Hinckley.

The game held significant importance, as it was the last for long-time player Rewiti Vaimoso, before he headed back to New Zealand.

The day was sunny, but the strong cross field wind was to have its say on the outcome, making it difficult for both teams to play.

It was Lichfield who started the brightest with the wind at their back. Running lines and excellent handling seeing them cut through the Scunthorpe defence, only for the final pass to be dropped. Play was brought back for an offside and Luke Massey put the first points on the board for the visitors.

The Greens continued to play, but the error count was beginning to creep up and the home side fed of this as they took play deep into the Lichfield half with some strong runs, crossing the line for a converted try on 13 minutes.

The visitors rallied and took play into the 22\. Scunthorpe were penalised, but the tricky conditions saw the penalty strike the post.

Scunthorpe were starting to win the midfield battle, with close breaks and Vaimoso making yards every time he touched the ball. It was one of these breaks that saw the ball fed to to a supporting player to score a try in the corner. An excellent conversion taking the score to 14-3 as the half closed out.

Lichfield started the second half in lively fashion, reclaiming the kick off before going through the phases. An excellent kick from Cotterhill finding space for Rowlands to run through and score. Massey slotted an excellent wide conversion.

Unfortunately that was to be as good as it got, and the Greens were made to pay for committing too many errors. Scunthorpe ran in four tries, two for departing Vaimoso, as they took advantage of some slack play from Lichfield.

The Greens were able to grab a consolation try with the last play, as some neat hands from the team saw Evans break through to draw the final man and pass to Greg Massey who raced into the corner to score to finish the game 38-18.

**Lichfield:** Birt, Gabbitass, Poole, Turner, Squire, Burton (capt), Milner, Southern; Cotterhill, L Massey, Wootton, G Massey, Maxwell-Keys, Rowlands, J Massey. Subs: Taplin, Thompson and Evans.
