Pupils from a Lichfield dyslexia school have been scooping honours for their sporting abilities.

Maple Hayes students Emma Harris and Liam Spain have both picked up medals at the Independent Schools Association (ISA) competitions at national and regional level.

Emma, 12, was part of the freestyle relay and medley relay teams that both finished second in the ISA Swimming Nationals in Coventry on Saturday.

Both teams consisted of four Year 7 girls from across the West Midlands, with the freestyle relay team clocking a time of 2:17.41 and the medley relay quartet finishing in 2:36.59 to ensure Emma left with a medal in each hand.

There was also further success for the school when Liam, 12, took first place in the regional senior athletics Year 7 boys shot put competition held at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham.

Following his success, Liam will now compete on a national scale at the ISA Athletics Championships in the same stadium on Monday 17 June 2013.

These triumphs come on the back of a drive to increase sporting activities at the school.

Dr Daryl Brown, headteacher at Maple Hayes, said: “It is terrific to see that our students are showing their sporting potential on both a regional and national level.

“We’ve recently increased the amount of time that our pupils spend doing sporting activities and the time they spend generally outside.

“Recently our students went out on a geography field trip that included them scaling rock faces, which gives you an indication as the encouragement we give our pupils.

“To see this decision producing results in competitions such as these is very pleasing and, hopefully, Emma and Liam’s success will inspire their fellow students to push themselves at their chosen sports.

“This could be the start of a long line of Maple Hayes sporting success.”
