# Lichfield students commemorate Christmas Truce

Pupils at a Lichfield school donned their favourite team kits and kicked off a special day of remembrance for the Christmas Truce of 1914, as part of a nationwide Football Remembers campaign.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of English and German troops downing arms during the First World War to engage in a game of football in No Man’s Land.

Pupils at Maple Hayes Dyslexia School

To mark the occasion, Maple Hayes Dyslexia School hosted a commemorative assembly, in which a short film on the Christmas Truce was shown, before 14-year-old Maya Eveson, who is the only student studying GCSE German at the school, performed a reading of Silent Night in the language – the hymn which signalled peace before the friendly game commenced a century ago.

After the assembly the specialist dyslexia school held a supersize football match.

Dr Daryl Brown, headteacher at Maple Hayes Dyslexia School, said: “We wanted to get involved in this project, not just because we have huge respect for those who fought and gave their lives to defend our country, but also because we strongly believe that sport brings people together – as it did 100 years ago and continues to do so today.

“Unsurprisingly, our pupils got into the spirit of the day, with the most diverse range of football kits I’ve ever seen, but more than that, they were genuinely interested in learning about the poignant events of that day.”
