# Lichfield students raise money for Down’s Syndrome support group

Pupils at Maple Hayes Dyslexia School handed over a mammoth cheque to Down Syndrome support group Stepping Stones today during a special assembly held to present the charity with a £2,250 donation after a year of tireless fundraising.

Dr Brown, headmaster at the Lichfield school, said: “We’re immensely proud to be handing over this considerable sum of money to a such a deserving and inspirational charity. Not only did our pupils choose the charity, they also came up with the fantastic fundraising ideas that allowed us to reach such a big total.”

Pupils at the school hosted non school uniform days, fancy dress competitions, cake sales, a summer fete and a ‘Maple Hayes has got talent’ competition to raise money. They selected Stepping Stones after meeting Sarah Sutton, a parent volunteer with the organisation and her 22 month old daughter Zoe, who has Down’s Syndrome.

Sarah, who returned to Maple Hayes Dyslexia School with her daughter to accept the donation on behalf of the charity, said:

“Having started with a simple monthly coffee morning for families to meet and chat, Stepping Stones now supports over 85 families with children ranging from just a few months old to early teens. We provide a multitude of services including speech and language therapy sessions, playball sessions, dance, drama, swimming, horse riding, days out and training for parents and teachers.

“We are thrilled that Maple Hayes has chosen to support us and absolutely delighted that they have managed to raise so much money. Stepping Stones was a lifeline to us when Zoe was born and it was really important to be able to meet other parents who had travelled this road before us.

“As Stepping Stones is a parent-led charity, we have to raise all our funds ourselves and it takes £5000 per month to maintain the current level of activities Stepping Stones provides. All the charity’s money is raised either through grants or fundraising, so this generous donation will help fund two whole weeks worth of charity activity. We cannot thank the school enough.”
