A Jeremy Corbyn victory in the Labour leadership contest wouldn’t be the end of the Green Party, according to their Lichfield and Burntwood branch.

UKIP leader Nigel Farage claimed that if the Islington MP replaces Ed Miliband on September 12 that it would spark the death of the Greens.

Mr Corbyn is the bookies favourite to beat leadership hopefuls Liz Kendall, Yvette Cooper and Andy Burnham.

The 66-year-old veteran left-winger has pledged to re-open Britain’s coal mines, which is something Simon Partridge, local Green Party branch spokesman, believes is unacceptable.

He added: “I think a victory for Jeremy in the Labour leadership contest would open up ground for some kind of coalition or at least give us people we can work with.

“Although there is some common ground on social justice, Jeremy is committed to re-opening Britain’s coal mines, which is something we are completely opposed to, so he hasn’t stolen our thunder on environmental issues.”
