Low income homes in Lichfield and Burntwood could be eligible for up to £135 off their energy bills.

The Government’s Warm Homes Discount Scheme gives the discount to qualifying households and Lichfield District Council is urging local residents to check if they are eligible.

People will qualify for the discount if, on July 20 2013, their supplier was part of the scheme, their or their partner’s name was on the bill, and they were either:

- 75 or over and getting the guarantee credit element of pension credit (even if receiving savings credit)
- under 75 and only getting the guarantee credit element of pension credit (but not if they also receive savings credit)

Households that qualify for the discount will be sent a letter before the end of February telling them one of two possible messages. The first is that they qualify and don’t need to do anything else. The other is that they qualify but need to register with their electricity supplier by March 14 2014.

Anyone receiving pension credit that has not received this letter by the end of February can contact Lichfield District Council’s energy advice line on 0800 677 1543 or their electricity provider.

Councillor Colin Greatorex said: “Heating bills are becoming a worry for many of our residents, so we’re urging everyone that receives pension credit or are on a low income, to make sure they don’t miss out on the Warm Homes Discount.

“If you are not sure if you are eligible, or you haven’t received a letter from your electricity supplier, please contact our energy advice line for free and we will do our best to help you.”

A second ‘broader group’ of people may also be eligible for the discount, but the individual electricity providers decide the criteria, which generally includes vulnerable people.

Most electricity providers that supply more than 250,000 households will be offering the discount. This element is decided on a first come, first served basis. Schemes are already booking up, so if local anyone thinks they might qualify they should contact their electricity supplier.

To find out if you are eligible for the Warm Homes Discount, call Lichfield District Council’s energy advice line on 0800 677 1543\. The deadline to claim is March 14 2014\. Late claims won’t be accepted.
