Craig Harris took charge of Chasetown FC for the first time in his opening pre-season friendly against a very good young Crewe Alexandra side.

From the off, Crewe were on the front foot and were head inside two minutes. Byron Moore and Shaun Miller combined with neat passing inside the penalty area, with the ball eventually sliced into his own goal by Mark Hands.

The Railwaymen doubled their lead in the 7th minute with another well-worked goal, with Shaun Miller the recipient before netting past Ryan Price.

You would have forgiven Chasetown for being shell-shocked at the start, but Craig Harris said after the game that he’s told the players to have a go in pre-season and the Scholars responded well, with visiting keeper Alan Martin at his best to dive low to his left to keep out a shot from returning striker Gary Hay.

Crewe extended their lead on the half-hour mark when Ryan Price conceded a spot kick which Byron Moore converted confidently.

Martin was again forced into action to keep out a header from Nick Wellecomme, after a delightful chipped pass from Chris Slater, as Chasetown proved they too could pass the ball neatly and effectively.

Matt Johnson cleared off the line for The Scholars before the break, but Crewe made it 4-0 in the second half when Max Clayton got the first of his two goals.

If Crewe’s first goal was fortunate, so was their fifth as Max Clayton drove the ball across the penalty area and it struck Shaun Miller on the face, completely wrong footing Ryan Price.

Goal number six was, for me, the pick of the bunch. After Martin had saved a Chasetown effort, and Crewe had forced a throw-in on the left-hand side, the Alex, split Chasetown apart with first time touches that saw them go the length of the field before Clayton slotted home.

Despite the heavy rain of the last few weeks, and persistent rain during the match, the pitch held up magnificently and both sides were quick to praise groundsman Bob Brookes. The slick surface benefitted Crewe, as triallist and substitute Tim Grice made it 7-0.

Scholars substitute Billy Russell went close to reducing the arrears five minutes from time, and then in the dying minutes went one better as The Scholars found a way through the Crewe rear guard, with Russell leaving Martin no chance.
